Mushroom Hunting

Autumn is on its way and mushroom season is about to begin here in West Cork. If you follow me on social media you know we spent the summer moving house. We’re down in Cononagh now (technically Rosscarbery to An Post!) and not more than a mile away from Dromillihy Woods. My husband and I took our Rottweiler Furiosa for a walk (Hike! That is a HIKE! lol) on the weekend to get some fresh air and so I could try out my new cheap and cheerful clip on lenses for my iPhone. A friend had said these woods were good for mushroom foraging, but I didn’t expect to see much with my limitations holding me back from traipsing off trail. I was in luck though, we found loads. Some with a cap the size of a pin head.

I absolutely loved this picture of the tiniest mushroom I have ever seen let alone found myself. I kind of expected my fascination with Mushies to die off after I finished my course in May, but they still captivate me. I suspect they will continue to be part of my art for awhile. I am also struck by how much fun I am having with these micro and macro lenses. I am fascinated by the tiny microcosms of nature and now I get to really explore and investigate them in a way I have never experienced before. It’s just this pure creative delight I feel every time I find another subject matter to explore.

Between some wonderful reference pictures I was able to collect, and some new objects of interest we’ve gathered like decorative gourds, shells and seed pods, I have enough materials to play with for my next artistic explorations. If you don’t follow me on Instagram or Facebook, feel free to as I am fairly regularly posting on those platforms. Links are listed along the left hand side of this page.

Also, with regards to my fundraising art for kiln exchange, I am only 500€ off my target and with a few more sales the Kiln will be mine. I am so excited I can’t even put it into words. How that we’re settled at the new house, have our sheds and are mostly unpacked, I will be heading back to studio this coming Thursday when the daughter goes back to school.

Mind yourselves and enjoy the fall weather ❤
